Lost Fingers is a Canadian trio of musicians from Quebec, who love gypsy swing jazz (Django style). In 2008 they released the “Lost In The 80s” album, which created a great surprise in the audiences and sold 200.000 copies in over a year. Their sound is smooth, playful and simple, but most importantly, the whole album consists of 12 covers of well known and overheard songs, which will draw a huge smile on your face. I won’t reveal the songs. I’ll give you this chance… This album, rocks! 4.5/5!

Bongolian Candidate…
”Outer Bongolia” is the third album of The Bongolian aka Nasser Bouzida and was released in 2007. What you can find here? Psychedelic grooves dipped into funk and jazz, latin soul and bongo rhythms served with breaks and big beat. Great production and a free ticket to travel to the sound of the past. The Bongolian is one hell of a musician and knows well how to merge classic music genres with a dancefloor attitude. Don’t miss this (if you don’t have it, already)… 4/5!
In The Name Of Groove (Sequel)…
Chinese Man’s second work, “The Groove Session Vol.2″, was a better one. Yes, yes! Can you believe it? His self production is impeccable. His sampling is out of this world. The fusion of sounds establishes a new era in trip hop. Once in a few years, some talented musicians arise and the whole world is talking about them. Chinese Man is categorised among them and now we can, safely, tell stories to our children, of a great DJ that appeared out of thin air and changed the music scenery, forever. 4.5/5!
Rooted Deep…
It’s been a while since the last time we heard from the Aussie DJ and producer. Katalyst stroke back from down under in 2011 with his latest album, “Deep Impressions”. Once again he blends funk, jazz, reggae and disco with hip hop and dirty sounds. He collaborates with singers like Stephanie McKay, Jane Doe, Steve Spacek and many more and he delivers one masterpiece and maybe his best work until now. “Deep Impressions” is a 2011 album that you must have. Absolutely amazing… 4/5!
Show Time…
There aren’t many things left to say about Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. This band revived soul and funk like no other and wrote music history under the protection of Daptone Records. “Soul Time!” is their latest work. As a matter of fact, it’ s a compilation of songs played only in live gigs, making them really hard to find. The original voice of Sharon Jones, including the fresh sound of the Dap Kings, is what it takes to lift your spirit up in the air and make you feel so good, like a new man. Enough with the talking. Just listen to it. It’s worth it. 4/5!
Who’s To Blame?
”Put It On Me” was released in 2009 and established Danny Massure as one of the most talented producers in todays funk/ jazz music scene. 5 tracks which are swinging between funk, jazz and reggae, plus the remixes from Badboe, Jayl Funk, Omegaman and The Breakbeat Junkie, are ready to travel you to the modern dance sound and picture you the transformed past. Get on it! 4/5!
Bombs Away…
Torpedo Trickser comes from Germany, he yells “Funky Breaks Uber Alles” & he is coming to be the head of your VIP party. “What I Got EP” was released back in 2008, which made him an honorable member of the elite force, in the new breaks era. Mixing jazz and funk with a great selection of samples, this EP is energetic, playful and revitalising. Don’t forget this guy. He’s up to some great thing. Just be patient. Until then, take a close look in this gem and…..paaaaaaartyyyyyy! 3.5/5.
God Sent…
Ο Kormac είναι γνωστός beatsmaker με μεγάλη αγάπη για τον retro και vintage ήχο. Κομμάτια του έγιναν γνωστά μετά από τη συμμετοχή του σε κάποιες συλλογές της Cast-A-Blast. Μάλιστα, κυκλοφόρησε και δίσκο, σχετικά πρόσφατα. Πριν από όλα αυτά όμως, εθεάθη με το “Good Lord EP”, με το οποίο έκανε και αίσθηση. Ο Kormac κάνει τα πράγματα απλά, περιπλέκοντας breaks, hip hop, jazz και swing. Παντρεύει το παλιό με το νέο και επισημαίνει ότι ο φρέσκος ήχος δεν ξεχνάει ποτέ τις ρίζες του. Ένα εξαιρετικά παιχνιδιάρικο 7ιντσο, που ενδεχομένως να έπρεπε να το πουλάνε στα Jumbo, αντί για την μαλακισμένη συλλογή τους με τις σπαστικές διαφημίσεις τους… 4/5!
Recipe For The Ear…
Ξεκινάω λέγοντας πως η Bastard Jazz δεν αγαπάει τα cd. Στα 10 χρόνια ύπαρξης της, αυτή είναι μόλις η δεύτερη κυκλοφορία της, ενώ όλα τα υπόλοιπα είναι 7ιντσα. Το “Cookin’ Gumbo” του Captain Planet, είμαι σίγουρος πως θα κονταροχτυπηθεί για την πρώτη θέση στους καλύτερους δίσκους για το 2011. Είχα πολύ καιρό να ακούσω κάτι ανάλογο. Ο Captain κατέχει όλα τα απαραίτητα υλικά για τη δημιουργία μιας μουσικής σπεσιαλιτέ που θα σε αφήσει άφωνο. Το νέο ηχητικό συνταγολόγιο είναι εδώ και δεν θα πρέπει να το χάσεις. Latin, funk, hip hop και broken beats, εξαιρετικά δομημένα, με άποψη και προσωπικότητα. Το “Cookin’ Gumbo” θα ικανοποιήσει την πείνα σου για κάτι φρέσκο και η ψυχή σου θα ξερογλείφεται για ένα από τα album της χρονιάς. 4.5/5!
Surreal…
Το “Confessions Of A Belladonna Eater” κυκλοφόρησε το 2011 και παραδόξως δεν ακούστηκε ιδιαίτερα. Δεδομένου ότι ο Kid Loco είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα παιδιά, εδώ στην Ελλάδα. Ίσως και δικαιολογημένα βέβαια. Ο Loco δεν ξεφεύγει από τις συνηθισμένες δουλειές που μας έχει παρουσιάσει τα τελευταία χρόνια. Το ίδιο στυλ, με lo fi, jazzy και indie στοιχεία θα το βρούμε και εδώ. Ο δίσκος μοιάζει με μια συλλογή κομματιών, που ο Kid Loco είχε έτοιμα και ήθελε με κάποιο τρόπο να τα βγάλει στην αγορά. Δεν λείπουν, βέβαια, και οι εκπλήξεις, όπως η διασκευή στο “Passenger” αλλά και κάποια πολύ όμορφα τραγούδια, όπως το “Friends Of Mine”. Γενικά, είναι ένας μέτριος δίσκος, ικανός να σου δώσει κάποιες ευχάριστες στιγμές. 3/5.
